Buying secondhand or salvage building materials, appliances and furniture can save you a lot of money when remodeling or repairing/maintaining your home. Following is a list of Denver-area secondhand/salvage resources:
Habitat for Humanity Restores
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit that works in partnership with needy families to create affordable housing. One way Habitat raises money for this mission is through reselling secondhand building materials, appliances and furniture. These stores (called “Restores”) rely on donations from businesses and individuals and can be a real bargain to homeowners and renters. They typically have windows, doors, kitchen and laundry appliances, furniture and other hardware. Not only can these stores save you money, but if you have items from your home improvement projects that you don’t need, they can be a way to recycle those otherwise hard-to-dispose-of materials.

Extras
Extras is a for-profit building materials thrift store, which typically has windows, doors, cabinets, miscellaneous hardware and rigid polyiso insulation. Polyiso is short for polyisocyanurate, which is a type of high R-value rigid board insulation. Extras gets the seconds from the factory and resells the boards at about half the retail cost.

Sears Scratch & Dent Store
This is where Sears Corp. sells items that are damaged but still in good working order. Out-of-box items and items that have been damaged in delivery end up here. The prices are not as good as at the salvage stores, but each appliance sold here comes with the full manufacturer’s warranty.

The Lumber Guy
This salvage yard is one of the only places that carries a large supply of salvage lumber. This is a for-profit business where you can find good bargains, but you need to know your prices. Not all the items they sell are priced low enough to be worth the extra work involved in buying secondhand.
